Banana festival highlights fruit’s popularity

Friday, April 30th, 2010

It is well known that bananas are an office fruit favourite and now fans of the yellow fruit in Guam have started up an annual banana festival.

The inaugural Talofofo Village Banana Festival attracted hundreds of attendees over the course of its three-day run and saw the fruit showcased in almost every imaginable form, reports Guampdn.com.

Highlights of the festival included an array of banana concoctions cooked by local chefs, the crowning of the Little Miss Banana Festival Queen and a number of banana-related games booths.

Attendees also had the opportunity to learn how to grow bananas from seedlings.

Speaking to the news provider, Juanita Taitague, wife of Talofofo Mayor Vicente Taitague, said: "I want to promote the banana as much as possible because it was a big part of my childhood.

"I want the children to learn how to plant bananas because this is part of our culture and we should continue it for our children and grandchildren."

Banana lovers can also visit the International Banana Club Museum, which will reopen in 2011 in California.

Office fruit ‘could help halt obesity epidemic’

Friday, April 30th, 2010

Regularly snacking on fruit from the office fruit basket helps contribute to a balanced diet and can help people maintain a healthy weight, something which an increasing number of individuals are struggling to do.

Experts speaking at a the recent Stockbridge Technology Centre/Horticultural Development Company conference highlighted that the UK is currently facing an obesity epidemic, reports Horticulture Week.

This is costing the NHS millions and impacting on businesses due to an increased number of sick days.

The attendees suggested that one of the ways to tackle this problem is to get people to eat more fresh fruit and vegetables as part of a healthy lifestyle.

Earlier this week, Liz O’Neill, head of communications at the Vegetarian Society, said that for a truly balanced diet people should eat a variety of fruits, ensuring that they get "optimum nutrition" from them.

So next time the office fruit delivery gets dropped off, make sure you select a range of fruits, such as grapes, bananas and apples, rather than just sticking to your favourite.

Don’t crash diet, eat office fruit

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

If you’re eating office fruit in order to look and feel healthier then look no further than the grapes.

Eating the popular office fruit, red grapes, from the fruit box can help protect your skin from wrinkles and lack of elasticity due to the powerful antioxidant resveratrol that they contain.

If you are concerned about your skin’s radiance and complexion you should try to avoid crash diets, according to the Daily Telegraph.

Although crash diets do lead to short-term weight loss, they can cause problems to your complexion.

Instead of dieting, you should eat plenty of fresh fruit, the paper advises.

Coupling fruit consumption with drinking eight glasses of water a day as well as cutting down on alcohol and cigarettes, could leave you with glowing skin and shinier hair too.

Apples are a great fruit to take from the office fruit basket because they contain Procyanidin B-2, which slows the effects of ageing – preventing wrinkles and promoting hair growth.

Office fruit ‘can save you from premature ageing’

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

Many of you will choose fruit from the office fruit delivery because it’s a tasty snack and healthy for you.

For example, taking a plum from the office fruit basket can help you fend off damage caused by "free radicals", which, when they attack cells, can increase heart disease and cancer risks.

A new study has revealed that unhealthy things like fizzy drinks and cakes can speed up the ageing process, which is something that office fruit does not do.

Phosphate, which is a mineral found in lots of soft drinks as well as cakes, breads and processed meat, can cause skin and muscles to wither and could also damage the heart and kidneys.

Mice were tested by researchers at Harvard University in the US, who found that high doses of phosphate could lead to premature ageing.

"Humans need a healthy diet and keeping the balance of phosphate in the diet may be important for a healthy life and longevity. Avoid phosphate toxicity and enjoy a healthy life," researchers from the study said.

Next time you get a craving for something sweet, rather than grabbing a fizzy drink or cake, you should take something from the office fruit box instead.

Londoners ‘favour takeaways over office fruit’

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

When you’re having a tough day at work, heading for the office fruit delivery could be the best thing to do as the array of tasty office fruit treats, like figs and pears, can boost your energy levels as well as aid your digestion.

Despite the well-known health benefits of fresh fruit, a new survey has found that in the UK, 88 per cent of meals eaten tend to be takeaways rather than meals rich in fresh fruit and vegetables, reports the London Daily News.

Londoners are the worst offenders for not eating fruit, with 67 per cent stating that they would eat more if they knew how to incorporate fruit and vegetables into meals, research commissioned by Florida Grapefruit has revealed.

The best city in the UK for fresh fruit consumption is Leeds, according to the survey, as residents munch their way through more fruit and veg than anywhere else in the country.

So if you’re in a workplace in the capital city, you might want to make the most of your fruit basket at work to make sure you get your recommended ’5-a-day’.

Eat a range of office fruit to ‘achieve optimum nutrition’

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

When your office fruit delivery arrives at your workplace, you’ve got a whole host of different office fruits to take your pick from.

Eating a variety of different office fruits from the fruit basket will help you make the most of their nutritional value, it has been claimed.

Liz O’Neill, head of communications at the Vegetarian Society, said that many experts "recommend eating a wide range of different fruits" to make sure you achieve the "optimum nutrition" from them.

A recent study conducted in the US found that phytonutrients, which are compounds that occur naturally in plants, can provide a variety of potential health benefits, including improved eye, bone and heart health as well as supporting the function of the brain and immune system.

It is believed that these benefits come from the pigments found in brightly-coloured fruit.

Several key phytonutrient families eaten in the diet of Americans include oranges, grapes and strawberries, the study, which was supported by the Nutrilite Health Institute in the US, found.

Ms O’Neill recommended eating seasonal fruits to make sure they not only boost health but also sustainability too.

Taking some strawberries from the office fruit box will not only provide you with a tasty snack, it might also help improve the health of your heart.

Eating workplace fruit ‘can help you live longer’

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

If you’re a fan of taking a snack from the office fruit delivery you will be adopting a healthier lifestyle, which could impact on how long you live.

A study has found that having an unhealthy lifestyle could increase the risk of dying so much that it was the equivalent to being 12 years older than your actual age.

If you have any combination of four different unhealthy lifestyle factors, such as poor diet, smoking, lack of exercise and excessive drinking, you are at risk of early death.

Researchers from the University of Oslo in Norway found that diets which are low in fruit and vegetable consumption are associated with a slightly elevated risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer and premature mortality.

Participants in the study were followed for around 20 years. Even if they had only one of the unhealthy lifestyle behaviours, they increased the likelihood of dying during that time by 85 per cent.

Tucking into fruit at work could well help you live longer, even if it’s just because the office fruit delivery provides you with a multitude of different vitamins and minerals to help you ward off various ailments.

Office fruit ‘gets celebs back into shape’

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

Office fruit is a great snack because it’s a low-fat and healthy treat.

If you decide to have a pear from the office fruit delivery, you’ll find that its fibre content helps regulate and reduce cholesterol levels, which means the effects of fried meals are countered by the office fruit.

Eating fruit at work is a great way for women to get back their figure post-pregnancy as has been demonstrated by Irish footballer Robbie Keane’s wife Claudine.

The 27-year-old managed to regain her toned figure just two weeks after giving birth, putting the weight loss down to healthy eating and exercise, reports the Daily Record.

During her pregnancy, the WAG made sure she only ate around 300 calories more each day, snacking on fruit in between the three main meals of the day.

Now, the former Miss Ireland contestant has a mid-morning fruit smoothie after eating a healthy cereal breakfast, and snacks on fruit throughout the day to satisfy her sweet cravings.

Eating office fruit can not only help you get through a busy day at work, with office fruit like bananas containing energy-boosting sugars, but digging into the office fruit box can be a great way to help you maintain a slim line figure.

Mr Orange is YouTube hit

Monday, April 26th, 2010

An animated fruit, dubbed the Annoying Orange, has proved to be a massive YouTube hit.

The fruit stars in a YouTube clip that has now been viewed around 108 million times on the website, reports the Wall Street Journal.

Mr Orange is famed for taunting other fruit and vegetables, heckling them and cracking terrible jokes in the video clips, which are extremely well-received on the world’s most popular online video community.

The clip’s grand finale is the death of one of his fruity friend, who is decapitated by a knife.

Mr Orange is the brainchild of Dane Boedigheimer, who provides the voice for the irritating fruit, and now sells Mr Orange merchandise as well as raking in the ad revenue for the much-loved clip.

Not all of Mr Orange’s food mates meet a tragic end in the clips, as the Annoying Orange has a romantic interest in the shape of Passion Fruit, a charming full-lipped luscious fruit who catches his eye.

Luckily for fans of the fruit hit wonder, the cynical citrus fruit is unlikely to see the sharp end of a human knife. Mr Boedigheimer told the newspaper that he had "fallen in love with the little guy".

Office fruit ‘can reduce hayfever symptoms’

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

Most of you know the old adage "an apple a day keeps the doctor away", which may encourage you to choose the red or green office fruit from the office fruit delivery as the pectin content in them really does act as an antioxidant.

But picking an apple from the office fruit box can even reduce any hayfever symptoms you’re experiencing.

The Times has compiled a list of things that help reduce the health effects caused by hayfever, such as puffy eyes, runny nose.

It has based its recommendations on research from Japan, which came out a year ago, that suggests eating apples, berries and cherries can decrease the effects of the annoying symptoms.

These three fruits contain quercetin, which, when 100mg is consumed, led to hayfever sufferers experiencing significantly fewer problems with itchy, sore eyes than people who took a placebo in the tests.

Unfortunately, not all hayfever symptoms were reduced by the quercetin consumption, but few people who experience hayfever would be ungrateful for less itchy eyes.

So if you’re sitting bleary-eyed at your desk, you might want to take some cherries, apples or strawberries from the office fruit basket to see a bit more clearly.
