Stressed at work? Turn to the office fruit basket

Friday, May 28th, 2010

Everyone has bad days at work when they can feel their stress levels rising and it seems that the solution may be as simple as reaching for the office fruit basket.

A recent article for the News Shopper highlighted that when people are facing tough times they should be sure to maintain a tip-top condition to take on any challenges thrown at them.

It added that when people are stressed they can often rely on stodgy unhealthy comfort foods but in reality this can just create more problems by making people feel sluggish and lazy.

Instead, the news provider suggested that people try and eat a balanced diet which is plentiful in minerals and vitamins and does not contain foods which can act as blocks to nutrients being absorbed.

So, if you are feeling tense at work, ditch your chocolate bars and crisps and reach into the office fruit basket for a pear, apple or banana, all of which contain a variety of minerals and are great for boosting energy.

Take a strawberry from the office fruit basket to celebrate summer

Friday, May 28th, 2010

Strawberries are the ultimate summer fruit, enjoyed by people on picnics and sports fans at Wimbledon throughout the warmer months.

Writing in the Daily Telegraph, Alex Mitchell said that while strawberries are available in the winter, they pale in comparison to the juicy red fruits that people can snack on in summer.

"Not those specimens you can buy in the dead of winter that slump from pink acidity to fluffy grey mould overnight, but proper red ripe ones that actually smell of strawberry and drip juice on the table," he said, adding that tasting a perfect summer strawberry can transport people back to their childhood summers.

Snacking on strawberries from the office fruit box can be a great way to enjoy the warmer weather even if you are stuck at work.

And with recent research by a team at the University of Bristol highlighting that eating a healthy diet high in fruit and vegetables can give you a tan, what more excuse to you need to enjoy some summery office fruits?

New super fruit is on the scene

Friday, May 28th, 2010

A new exotic super fruit has burst onto the scene and is proving a firm favourite with high end chefs.

The baobab (pronounced bau-bab) has six times as much vitamin C as oranges, twice as much calcium as milk and more magnesium than spinach, according to the Caterersearch blog.

Hailing from Africa, the fruit is off-white in colour and breaks open to reveal a powdery, sherbet-like pulp.

It supposedly tastes like a combination of caramelised pear and grapefruit, although it is thought it is better as an ingredient rather than eaten on its own, meaning it is unlikely to turn up in the office fruit box any time soon.

Anyone seeking a fruit with super nutritional properties which they can easily snack on at work should try a tasty peach, which is high in vitamin C and is great at helping the body fight off pesky infections.

Peaches also contain Beta-caratone which our bodies can transform into vitamin A – which helps improve people’s eyesight. Perfect for office workers chained to a computer all day.

Office fruit strawberries are perfect for celebrations

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

Eating strawberries from the office fruit delivery probably makes you think of the Great British Summertime and sitting around in the sunshine eating the juicy fruits.

But, how many of you office fruit fans would choose to celebrate with strawberries?

After winning the US final of Dancing with the Stars, Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger ate a post-victory treat of strawberries covered with chocolate while en route to meet and greet the New York media.

The on-off girlfriend of British F1 superstar Lewis Hamilton seemed to have received the gift from Good Morning America, the Examiner reports.

Next time you’re heading to the office fruit box, you may want to reward yourself with some strawberries and use them to celebrate any minor achievements you may have made during office hours.

During the summer months, strawberries can help with cell reproduction in your body, due to their rich content of vitamin A, which means your skin’s less likely to get dry when the air conditioning’s on full blast.

Lose weight with office fruit snacks

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

So, with summer just around the corner, many of you office fruit lovers may be looking for ways to shift a little bit of excess weight before donning your bikini or trunks on the beach.

Along with doing some exercise, health and fitness experts Amanda and Nicki writing for the Sun, have advised people to: "Eat food you like at a time that suits you and work out at your own pace – it’s that simple."

Nutrition expert Amanda has advised eating fruit snacks mid-morning or afternoon to sustain your energy levels and stave off hunger.

In her seven-day diet plan, which outlines healthy low-fat meal choices for breakfast, lunch and dinner, she has recommended a variety of office fruits to munch on throughout the day.

Peaches, pears, nectarines and satsumas are all some of the fruity snacks she favours, all of which can be found in the office fruit delivery.

Nectarines are great office fruits to eat on warmer days as they naturally contain mineral salts, such as potassium, which help replenish any salts lost from your body if you perspire while at work or after a lunchtime gym session.

So, if you’re hoping to lose some weight before the summer, you should take some healthy snacks from the delivery and eat fruit at work.

Office fruit ‘does not affect carbon footprint’

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

The health-conscious among you probably go to the office fruit delivery to indulge in your daily treat of apples, which can help your vision with their Vitamin A content – great news when you’re sat in front of a computer all day.

But have any of you thought about the carbon footprint of office fruit when eating it?

Mike Berners-Lee, writing for the Daily Telegraph, has been offering people advice on how to combat their carbon footprint by being more energy efficient, choosing greener travel and through picking the right foods.

About one-fifth of Britain’s carbon footprint is made up by food. But, according to Mr Berners-Lee, bananas and apples – some of the office fruit favourites – don’t harm the environment too much.

This is because they are usually imported by sea rather than air, along with oranges, from wherever in the world they come from.

So, you can feel like you’re being eco-conscious as well as health-conscious next time you dig into the office fruit box.

Wimbledon appoints first poet

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

The Great British Summer conjures up images of rainy days primarily but the tennis championships are usually one of the highlights too.

In typical British fashion, we pin all our hopes on the tennis players from the UK only to have them cruelly dashed as we munch on our strawberries – the quintessential Wimbledon accompaniment.

Now, a tennis fan has been appointed the first ever poet at the tournament.

Matt Harvey, who has already written his first poem, called Grandest of Slams, as Championships Poet 2010, said he was thrilled to achieve the accolade.

Hopefully, Mr Harvey will be penning some poems about strawberries this summer.

Strawberries may epitomise a day in the British countryside but they can also give your body some nifty perks.

They’re rich in vitamin C and A. Vitamin C helps boost your immune system and just general all-round health, while vitamin A aids cell reproduction, which can be great if you catch a bit too much sun while watching the tennis.

Commenting on his prestigious title, Mr Harvey joked: "It’s an honour, and I’m acutely conscious it’s the only time I’ll come first in anything at Wimbledon, unless you count the queue for strawberries."

So, we’ll all wait with bated breath for the first strawberry-related poem that Mr Harvey writes.

Eat office fruit to stay healthy

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

You all know that each time you dig into the office fruit delivery you’re one step closer to getting your recommended 5-a-day portions of fruit and veg.

Eating grapes from the office fruit basket is a great way to detox your body as they’re a good source of phyto-chemicals – powerful antioxidants that fight cholesterol and boost the immune system – which means they help you through a long day at work after a few mid-week drinks.

Office fruits can help you eat a balanced diet, which will make you healthier and could help you lose weight.

Rather than engaging in a fad diet, Coronation Street star Samia Smith revealed to Closer magazine that eating healthily has helped her lost her baby weight.

The Corrie actress, who gave birth to her daughter Freya last October, has managed to regain her figure with a self-devised healthy eating plan.

She gained two stone while pregnant but has now slimmed back down to a size eight, which is healthy size for her 5ft2in frame, just by consuming a balanced diet coupled with light exercise.

If you’re hoping to tone up your body this summer, you should take a treat from the office fruit box to get your day off to a healthy start by eating some fruit at work.

Office fruit can give you a natural glow

Monday, May 24th, 2010

Eating plums and peaches from the office fruit basket may be even more beneficial than you realised before.

If you take plums from the office fruit delivery they’ll help fight cell damage caused by villain molecules that increase heart disease and cancer risks, while peaches are rich in vitamin C, which helps defend the body from infections.

But, even better news for office fruit lovers is that eating these fruits can help give you a glowing complexion without you risking skin damage by lazing in the sun, a new study has found.

In as little as a month, eating fruit and veg can transform skin colour due to the carotenoids they contain, which are a class of around 600 pigments found in plants.

Leader of the research team, Ian Stephen of Bristol University, said: "We have produced evidence that dietary intake of fruit and vegetables affects skin colour."

People find the natural glow of five-a-day eaters more attractive than those who eat low-carotenoid diets too, according to the research which asked volunteers to evaluate the skin tone of photos men and women.

So, if you’re trying to achieve a healthy glow for the summer, you should eat more office fruit instead of heading for the nearest tanning salon.

Banana deal ‘set to be signed this month’

Friday, May 21st, 2010

A historic banana deal, which was agreed at the end of 2009 by members of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), is expected to be ratified next week.

The deal is related to import tariffs for South American nations that export bananas, reports Fruit Net.

If import tariffs drop, which they are expected to under the agreement, then banana lovers could benefit from lower prices as duties on the office fruit favourites should decrease too.

The final decision on the deal was reached in principle at the end of last year, which brought an end to one of the longest-running trade disputes to ever be dealt with by the WTO.

In other banana-related news this week, a double banana was found before a fun run organised by the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF).

Teresa Nightingale, general manager for the WCRF, said: "It just seems such an amazing coincidence that we discovered our ‘double banana’ the day before our Beat the Banana! fun run. I think it’s this banana that will take some beating."
