Office fruit news: Women show stress more than men

Friday, December 31st, 2010

Office fruit basket treats have multiple health benefits, one of which is reducing stress.

Treats from the office fruit delivery, such as peaches and nectarines, contain high levels of potassium, which helps balance the nervous system and regulate heartbeat.

This could be highly beneficial if you are a woman, as a new study has revealed you are likely to suffer stress at both work and home.

A four-year study carried out by researchers at the University of Gothenberg, in Sweden, revealed women scored higher than men in terms of back and neck pain, commonly associated with stress.

Even when physical cause was removed, the females continued to experience symptoms of stress.

Commenting on the findings, Professor Cary Cooper, organisational psychologist and health academic at Lancaster University, said: "In nearly every developed country women perform what we call the double shift.

"They go to work like a man but then also come home and perform the primary role at home so face double pressure from those two roles which leads to the symptoms of stress."

If you're feeling stressed at work, maybe try eating some office fruit to help you relax a bit.

Office fruit bananas ‘can be a great pre-drinking snack’

Thursday, December 30th, 2010

If you're an office fruit fan who's bound to overindulge on New Year's Eve, you might want some top advice on what to consume before you start drinking.

According to one nutrition expert, boosting vitamins B and C in the body is one way to ensure your messy night out doesn't lead to a messy morning after as well.

Carina Norris, talking to the Daily Mail, recommended eating a banana, having some orange juice and doing anything possible to boost potassium levels before a heavy night out.

She said the mineral "helps balance fluid levels that can take a hammering during drinking".

"Alcohol is a diuretic, so the body loses more fluid than it takes in," Ms Norris added.

Bananas from the office fruit basket are rich in potassium, as are peaches and nectarines, so they can help with this mineral.

Soft citrus fruit and bananas can help top up levels of vitamin B and C in the body, which, according to Ms Norris are "vital for energy and the immune system".

Don't forget, the NHS advises men drink no more than three to four units of alcohol a day, while women should stick to a maximum of two to three units daily.

Perk yourself up with post-Christmas office fruit snacks

Thursday, December 30th, 2010

If you're suffering from the post-Christmas blues, you might want to turn to the office fruit box for help.

According to mental health charity Mind, office fruit bananas are a great pick-me-up snack.

They contain trypotophan, which is a protein which the body turns into serotonin – known to produce an enlightening effect – so they're bound to boost your mood back in the office.

One reason you might need to be perked up is if you received a barrage of unwanted gifts this Christmas.

Apparently, two-thirds of people receive at least one present they don't want every year, according to the British Heart Foundation.

Nearly a third (30 per cent) of people would least like to get a festive jumper, followed by the latest celeb biography.

Some 16 per cent of people said novelty pants and socks were their least favourite gift.

Severe weather conditions this year have meant there have been fewer donations to charities this year, so you could help out by following the BHF's Mike Lucas advice and give your unwanted presents to help people in need.

That's definitely one further way of boosting the pick-me-up of your office fruit basket treat.

Bhutanese elephants develop a taste for mandarins

Wednesday, December 29th, 2010

Clementines and satsumas have long been a favourite from the office fruit basket and now it seems that the tasty and vitamin-filled soft citrus fruits have some new fans: Bhutanese elephants.

The creatures have reportedly developed a taste for mandarins growing on trees in the south-east of the country and are making the fruit part of their daily intake of around 149kg of vegetation, reports the BBC.

It is believed that a lack of available food in the jungle has forced the elephants into the orchards in search of food. While the creatures have been known to eat some fruits before, this is the first time they are known to have tried oranges.

"This has never happened before," orange exporter Pushpa Adhikari told local newspaper Kuensel, "and we are totally aghast."

"It's a serious threat to one of our main income sources."

While the elephants' new found fondness for mandarins may be bad news for locals, the tasty fruits could be a welcome addition to the animals' diets as they contain high levels of vitamin C, which boosts the immune system and vitamin B1, which helps reduce tiredness.

After six years, one in ten of the participants had some form of angina.

Those who had a worrisome relationship, or a demanding one, with their partner or children were 3.5 times more likely or twice as likely to suffer some degree of heart disease.

If you're feeling stressed out, office fruit could help you out as peaches and nectarines from the office fruit box help regulate heartbeat.

Mix of antioxidants ‘make office fruit good for you’

Thursday, December 23rd, 2010

Soft citrus fruits from the office fruit basket have plenty of different benefits.

With winter very much in full swing, you could well find the vitamin C in the office fruit helps you ward off annoying colds and flu. It helps boost the immune system, making you feel healthier and more energised.

Researchers from the Brigham Young University (BYU) in the US looked at why "there's something about an orange that's better than taking a vitamin C capsule".

"We think it's the particular mixture of antioxidants in an orange that makes it so good for you," said Tory Parker, BYU assistant professor of nutrition, dietetics and food science.

Parker said every time we eat carbohydrates and fats, we increase the number of harmful free radicals in our blood.

Eating fruit protects the body from that effect immediately after a meal, he said.

"Carbs and fat increase free radicals, and fruit and internal antioxidants counteract that."

Eat office fruit ‘to reduce cancer risk’

Wednesday, December 22nd, 2010

Office fruit has plenty of healthy benefits. For example, plums and apples in the office fruit basket are rich in antioxidants, which help reduce the risk of cancer.

The office fruit box treats fight the damage caused to cells by villain molecules in the body called free radicals, which raise the risk of cancer.

Eating office fruit could be just what you need, since a new study has revealed cancer survival rates in the UK are among the worst in the western world.

The rates of survival following bowel, lung, breast and ovarian cancer are worse here than in Canada, Sweden or Australia, the study, part-funded by the Department of Health, found.

Some 2.4 million people from around the world were studied for the research, which is seen to be the "most reliable record card yet" in relation to the UK's cancer rates.

According to leading charity Cancer Research UK, you can reduce your risk of getting many types of cancer by eating a diet which is rich in fibre, fruit and vegetables.

Live longer with some help from office fruit

Wednesday, December 22nd, 2010

Eating plenty of office fruit basket treats is a great way to help you get your recommended five-a-day and consume a healthy diet.

This is great news since a new study has revealed eating a healthy diet can help people live longer.

Chronic diseases such as cardiovascular illnesses and cancer are now among the biggest killers around the world but healthy diet can help reduce the risk of them, according to researchers from the University of Maryland in the US.

Study participants were split into groups according to their diet. Those consuming a so-called healthy one, which included plenty of fruit, veg, low-fat dairy products, among other foods, were found to be the least at risk of developing heart disease or cancer.

People eating a high-fat dairy diet were 40 per cent more likely to die, while those consuming sweets and desserts had a 37 per cent higher mortality risk than people in the healthy category.

Some office fruit, such as plums and apples, contain high levels of antioxidants which help prevent damage to cells caused by free radicals in the body. The antioxidants stop and reduce oxidisation, which helps prevent cancer.
