Sculptor makes banana look like Elvis

Thursday, April 28th, 2011

Office fruit fans are familiar with what a banana normally looks like, but now one artist has given the tasty treat a whole new look by using them as the basis for his sculptures.

Japanese artist Keisuke Yamada has sculpted the faces of Elvis, Davey Jones from Pirates of the Caribbean and various ghosts and ghouls into the yellow fruit.

He creates the fruity works of art using a toothpick and spoon and has to work at record speed before his creations go off.

Speaking to the Daily Mail Keisuke said: "I started making them about two weeks ago and since posting pictures of them online they have really taken off."

He added that he plans to make more in the future.

And the artist's creations are also helping him stay healthy, as he eats the bananas after he has photographed them.

Bananas are a great source of potassium and also release energy-boosting natural sugars, meaning Keisuke will be ready to get creative after his snack.

Boost your immunity with office fruit apples

Tuesday, April 26th, 2011

Office fruit apples can help boost the immune system, according to one health expert.

Former family GP Dr Penny Stanway, writing for the Daily Mail, said a medium-sized apple contains around eight per cent of people's daily vitamin C intake, which can really help give the immune system a bit of a kick.

Dr Stanway explained that when pectin from apples is digested, good bacteria ferments it, which "stimulates production of antiobodies and white blood cells", helping the body to ward off diseases and infections.

She also said apples could prevent bone loss associated with inflammation – which can often cause the condition osteoporosis.

Boron, found in the fruit, can restore oestrogen levels in the body, while pectin boosts stomach acidity, which increases the body's absorption of calcium – vital for healthy bones.

A recent study by boffins at Florida State University revealed that eating apples can increase levels of low-density lipoprotein – or bad cholesterol – in the body, boosting heart health.

Office fruit fans ‘likely to be hopeful’

Thursday, April 21st, 2011

All you office fruit fans out there are likely to be hopeful people, if a new study is to be believed.

Researchers from the US have found that happy people are ones who go for chocolate bars and sweets, while people who choose fruit are more likely to be hopeful – a good quality, we're sure you'll agree!

This is apparently because when people are feeling hopeful, they are thinking about the future – looking for the food with the least long-term impact, such as office fruit box treats.

Lead authors Karen Page Winterich, from Pennsylvania State University, and Kelly L Haws, from Texas A&M University, said people should try not to focus on the past when they are feeling happy.

"Instead, keep that positive glow and focus on your future, especially all the good things you imagine to come. Your waistline will thank you!"

Recently, nutritional therapist Penny Crowther said people realise the benefits five-a-day can offer in terms of reducing the risk of cancer, but they don't know how beneficial it can also be for digestive problems and boosting low energy levels.

Office fruit apples ‘can lower asthma risk’

Wednesday, April 20th, 2011

An apple a day keeps the doctor away, but it turns out there are numerous reasons why this is the case.

Office fruit fans out there take note: Apples can reduce the risk of people getting numerous different ailments, including asthma, according to Dr Penny Stanway, writing for the Daily Mail.

Apples and their juice apparently have a strong anti-asthma effect. Dr Stanway said this could be due to the high levels of antioxidants they contain, which are "natural disease fighters [with] an anti-inflammatory benefit".

By eating an unpeeled apple, perhaps from the office fruit delivery, once a day, you could get a big antioxidant boost, according to the health expert.

Researchers from Fox Chase Cancer Center in the US recently revealed that retinoic acid, a derivative of vitamin A found in apples, could aid with breast cancer therapy as it impacts on cell growth, proliferation and survival.

Improve your heart health with office fruit

Tuesday, April 19th, 2011

Office fruit fans tuck into healthy treats for numerous different reasons, from boosting their wellbing to trying to shift some excess weight.

Many people head to the office fruit basket to improve their cardiovascular health, with treats like plums known to contain antioxidants which attack free radicals, lowering the risk of heart disease.

Now, new research has revealed that consuming a vegetarian diet – rich in plenty of fruit and veg – could lower people's risk of cardiovascular disease.

A team from the Karolinksa Institute in Sweden and the Loma Linda University in the US carried out a cross-sectional survey which revealed the benefits of eating vegetarian fare.

The researchers found that 35 per cent of the veggies who participated in the study had a lower body mass index than 16 per cent of semi-vegetarians and 49 per cent of non-veggies, demonstrating their risk of metabolic syndrome.

Researchers from the University of Western Ontario, Canada, recently showed that tangerines could well be a new so-called superfruit, managing to lower people's risk of heart attacks, diabetes and strokes.

Office fruit fans warned over-40s ‘aren’t doing enough to curb obesity’

Monday, April 18th, 2011

Female office fruit fans might not be doing as much to tackle obesity as their male counterparts, according to a leading expert.

Professor Klim McPherson, the foremost obesity expert in the UK, warned that over-40s of both sexes are failing to do enough to address their weight, reports the Daily Mail.

He said men seem to be taking health messages and warnings on board far more than women, particularly in the 21 to 40 age bracket.

"There has always been a concern that people are eating themselves into an early grave, but [the latest] data shows that 21 to 40-year-old men are no longer doing so," the professor at the University of Oxford said.

Recently, a study by researchers at Florida State University revealed that apples have "incredible" health benefits, which could help reduce obesity, as well as boosting people's heart health.

Their research showed that women who ate apples had lower levels of bio-markers – such as C-reactive protein – associated with heart disease.

Office fruit news: The body still needs proteins even if you’re trying to slim down

Monday, April 18th, 2011

Office fruit fans who are trying to lose weight still need to ensure their body gets plenty of protein, one expert has suggested.

"To be able to successfully slim down, the body needs proteins every time you eat," advised Jessica Villa, an independent nutritionist for Big Matters.

She recommended adding plenty of fruit to a low-fat yoghurt to create a great snack.

The proteins and fats in certain things, like yoghurt, increase the body's uptake of sugar.

This is "so important to successfully snack without feeling hungry after one hour", Ms Villa added.

Nutrition consultant Dr Carina Norris recently said if you're a "snackish" person, you might want to take a little-and-often approach to eating.

She said you'll probably find it even easier to shift those pounds if you eat plenty of small, nutritious meals and you snack in between on healthy treats – such as fruit at work.

Boost your heart health with office fruit cherries

Friday, April 15th, 2011

Office fruit fans hoping to boost their cardiovascular health could find cherries are a very useful thing to snack on.

New research from boffins in the US has revealed that the combination of powerful antioxidants in tart cherries could lower people's risk of heart disease.

Three different studies carried out by the University of Michigan, University of Arizona and Brunswick labs revealed the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits of cherries – which some people may favour from the office fruit box.

A compound in the red fruit, called anthocyanins, is responsible for the heart-health boost cherries offer, the researchers said.

One of the studies revealed, as well as improving cardiovascular health, they can also lower cholesterol levels and reduce inflammation in overweight and obese adults.

Cherries from the office fruit delivery have another useful component in them as well – melatonin, which helps regulate sleep patterns, meaning you'll find it easier to nod off at night.
