Fruit: Fodder for the soul

The benefits of fresh fruit have been highlighted by British Food Fortnight.

Alexia Robinson, organiser of British Food Fortnight and the Love British Food campaign, said food was "fuel for the body and fodder for the soul".

"Eating British fruits and vegetables in season is good for you as they contain the nutrients, minerals and trace elements that our bodies need at particular times of the year," she added.

Ms Robinson was responding to recent research from University College London which showed that those who eat a diet rich in fruits, such as those found in an office fruit basket, in addition to vegetables, fish and other whole foods are significantly less likely to suffer depression.

Ms Robinson welcomed the results of the study, which was the first to look at the UK diet and depression.

She added: "I hope the University College’s research will make people think: Eat well; be happy!"

British Food Fortnight celebrates the diverse range of food produced in Britain.

Shops, pubs and restaurants are invited to run promotions, tastings and special menus, while schools are being encouraged to bring chefs into the classroom to teach children how to cook.
